As a rescue that deals primarily with senior and special needs dogs, we all know and understand that there will be hard times, but February was a particularly difficult month for all of us at Hopeful Hearts. In addition to Maxwell's disappearance, Ollie's parvo scare, and Bookie's surgery, we also suffered the loss of four of our angels.

Bismark was 11 years old when he joined the Hopeful Hearts family in late fall. His previous family moved and unfortunately they were unable to bring Bismark with them.

These changes in Bismark's senior years didn't phase him though, as this stunning boy had been well loved and remained loving and loyal throughout everything. His foster family called him a gentle giant.

After suffering from a suspected heart attack, Bismark went to the bridge on February 5th.

You made a huge impression on us with your ability to accept all the changes so late in your life, with grace and charm. A true gentleman. We'll miss you Bizzy.

Jazz was found wandering the streets of Gatineau when she was only one month old. After being adopted from the Gatineau SPCA, Jazz was quickly returned when she began having seizures and that's when we received the call to bring her into rescue. Arrangements were made for Jazz to be seen by a hospital that specialized in Fanconi Syndrome, but after reviewing her medical file, the specialists determined that the diagnosis was not good and they gave her less than a month to live.

What they didn't know was that Jazz was a fighter, and she proved all of those specialists wrong, spending another 12 months enjoying every minute of her life. Jazz loved everyone - humans and animals alike - greeting them with big kisses and constant tail wags. She was a natural at swimming, cherishing the freedom of movement it gave her.

After 15 months in palliative care, Jazz sadly went to Rainbow Bridge on February 7, 2012. She was a very special girl that will always be in our hearts, and although time with her foster family was short, they feel truly blessed to have spent this quality time with her.

Poppy was rescued in January 2010 when she was four weeks old, and being a quarter of the size and weight of her litter mates, she was nicknamed "super runt" with a real determination to survive. Since day one Poppy was always a tenacious little girl with a big dog attitude. She wasn't afraid to tell the big dogs off, steal their bones and toys when the moment presented itself, and then watch them give up and walk away when they knew they couldn't win. And yet when any new foster puppies arrived at her foster home, Poppy took them under her wing and taught them valuable puppy social skills.
Poppy went to the bridge suddenly on February 9th while in her foster home, after two years in palliative foster care. Autopsy results confirmed that she passed away due to a pulmonary embolism, and thankfully she did not suffer. Special thank you to to Dr. Beltran for performing the autopsy at no charge.
Her foster family misses her feisty personality, and sometimes they think they can still faintly hear her in the background, giving the other dogs in the house her attitude. Poppy, you are an extremely special girl who will never be forgotten. Forever in our hearts.

When we picked up 10 year old Fritz from the SPCA near the end of January he was in bad shape due to neglect. He had fleas crawling all over him, his teeth were horrific, and he suffered from painful crystals in his urinary tract.

Despite all Fritz endured, he was always smiling. He inspired us with his joy even though he was so broken, and he touched many hearts in such a short period of time.

We did everything we could to take away his pain, including IV fluids and medication, but nothing worked. Fritz left this world on February 16th, surrounded by people who loved him.

While we grieve along with their foster families and feel the loss, we also want to celebrate their lives. Some left us too soon and some exceeded expectations, but they all knew love until the end.

For the third year in a row, Hopeful Hearts is accepting angels into our program from Beirut, Lebanon. All of the dogs we bring in have no hope of adoption there due to their special needs. This year, we are hoping for 4 spots for adult dogs (3 missing limbs, one blind) as well as praying we can get an additional 2 spots for two special needs puppies (missing limbs).

Bookie's Raffle.

On February 17th we welcomed a little Miniature Pinscher named Bookie to the Hopeful Hearts family, and only hours later he was being rushed to the vet. Unbeknownst to us, Bookie had swallowed foreign objects prior to being surrendered to us and required emergency care. During the three hour long surgery at Ottawa Veterinary Hospital it was discovered that the objects had managed to wrap around Bookie's intestines, causing an infection, and part of the intestines had to be cut out and pieced back together. The next couple of days afterwards were critical for Bookie, but we all remained hopeful knowing this little guy had a strong spirit and was a fighter.

Bookie must have known how many people loved him and wanted to see his tail wag, because sure enough, he survived the surgery. I'm sure our cheers could be heard all throughout Ottawa when Bookie was given the green light to go home with his wonderful foster family.

It has been very heartwarming to see the dog community rally together for this little guy, and thanks to your incredible generosity, we received $2361.28 in donations through Bookie's Belly Fund. The final vet bill was over $5000.00 so we have put together this raffle in an effort to be able to save more dogs like Bookie who need our help.

Ollie - healthy as a horse, thanks to you!

At the end of January we were faced with a scary situation when recently adopted Ollie was diagnosed with Parvo. He was rushed to Altavista Animal hospital, fighting for his life. Ollie's new mom, Rebecca, had enough on her plate, and the last thing Hopeful Hearts wanted her to worry about was how she was going to pay this enormous vet bill.

Animal lovers united and together we managed to raise an amazing $2227.83, which covered Ollie's vet bill. It was a very hard week for everyone, but thanks to your unwavering support, little Ollie pulled through and went home with his mom a week

"Ollie and I would like to thank everyone for their generous donations a few weeks ago to the Dollars for Ollie fund that went towards vet bills. It was a trying time when Ollie fell ill with Parvo. He was weak and virtually lifeless. I was completely overcome with worry and sadness, fearing my little guy would be taken away so soon after his arrival. Fortunately, he received great care from the staff at Alta Vista just in time. Ollie pulled through tremendously. You wouldn’t be able to tell from his size, but he is a fighter. He knew lots of love, playtime, cuddles and treats were waiting for him, so he didn’t take long to convince the vets he was ready to come home. He even came home on the day of my birthday, and I couldn’t have asked for a more special gift.

Ollie is now healthy and happy again, and growing so quickly! He is just biding time until he can play with fur friends and meet new ones again. He can’t wait to go to puppy kindergarten. Ollie and I are truly blessed to have had the support from all of the generous people at Hopeful Hearts. It is so warming to feel the support, even from complete strangers! For example, when it was time to bring him home, I first stopped to pick up some food for him at the store. I was so excited that he was going to be okay and could come home that I told the store clerk all about him. She said, “Oh, are you talking about Ollie from Hopeful Hearts? I donated to his fund!” It is truly remarkable how this community rallied together to make things easier for Ollie, and myself. I cannot express my gratitude enough. Dog of the Week: Suki!

Suki is an affectionate and loving Japanese Chin who is cute as a button! She was found wandering the streets in Quebec and picked up by the SPCA. Although she waited, her people never came for her so Suki decided she would join the Hopeful Hearts family.

Even when it's cold outside, Suki is a true Canadian gal as she adores going for romps outside, rolling in the snow, and long walks. She can be a little intimidated by big or overly excited dogs, but is very curious about dogs her own size.

Bookie's Belly Fund

The bad lucky fairy has struck again.

Bookie is a little Miniature Pinscher who was just surrendered to Hopeful Hearts on Friday. Unbeknownst to us, Bookie swallowed some foreign objects prior to being surrendered and had to be rushed to the vet on Friday afternoon. He is currently at the Ottawa Vet Hospital with an obstruction and surgery is imminent.

Bookie needs us, and we would appreciate any help you can give him AND Hopeful Hearts. We don't have an estimate yet for his surgery, but suffice it to say, it will be costly.

UPDATES
February 19th: After 3 long hours they have now finished Bookie's surgery but the next 24-48 hours are critical. When the vet was operating they found objects wrapped around Bookie's intestines. The intestines were infected and unfortunately some of it had to be cut out and pieced back together. It's very guarded right now and Bookie may not make it, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. The vet was amazed at Bookie's spirit though and said he is a an incredible dog, a real fighter.

This surgery is going to cost thousands and thousands of dollars, so any amount you can donate will help in ways you can't imagine. We will be making arrangements for a Bookie fundraiser so stay tuned for details in the coming days.

February 20th: We received a call from OVH this morning and they let us know that Bookie is up, went pee, had something to eat and has KEPT IT DOWN!!! This is good news!! He's not out of the woods by any means but these are positive signs. :))

Dogs of the Week: Peanut & Lucky!

Lucky and her son Peanut are two loveable pomeranians who spent their entire lives together with one person. Sadly their dad had to go into a home after being diagnosed with cancer and dementia, and their family decided it would be best for Lucky and Peanut to become part of the Hopeful Hearts family. Despite all of these changes, Lucky and Peanut are adapting beautifully to their new surroundings and are already up to some pomeranian hijinx.

Bring Maxwell Home!

Maxwell, a rescue from Hopeful Hearts Dog Rescue in Ottawa, Ontario escaped from his foster home on Jan. 24th. He was lost in the area of Upper Dwyer Hill Rd./ between March Rd. and Old Almonte Rd. and has been on the move.

He is a red fox lab, scar on the right side of his face, wearing collar with clip and recent neuter. He had just arrived on a transport from Kentucky so he does not know his new home. Maxwell does not have a winter coat nor is he used to the cold. He is very shy and although he has been seen coming out of the bush, on rural roads, he retreats back into it if approached. He must be very hungry and tired as he has been on the roads for a full week now.

It is important to find him as soon as possible and we are asking the public to please help bring this poor rescued dog back to a safe place. Reward is being offered, he needs to be found soon....Please keep your eyes open for this fellow and check your outbuildings as he may be hiding in there. He needs all the help he can get to be brought back to a safe place. As you can imagine the folks from Hopeful Hearts are devastated, overwhelmed and want this boy back safe and sound. He deserves the second chance they were giving him and your help is needed to make this a reality for Maxwell.

We are working closely with a tracker and once there is another sighting, he'll be out looking for him. If people would like to drive around to look for him that is fine, but no calling at all. No approaching either. Just let us know if you see him and which direction he is going in. We will contact the tracker immediately. We also still have the live trap set up with food and are checking it regularly.

So to reiterate: NO NOISE, NO CALLING, NO APPROACHING HIM.

UPDATE: Last two seen areas:

Feb. 3 - Wm. Mooney Rd. at creekbed overpass (about halfway between McGee Side Rd. and Richardson Side Rd.);

Feb. 9 – McGee Side Rd. at 417 overpass. Our boy appears to be wandering in the general area (South of March Rd.) between McGee Side Rd. and Richardson Side Rd., but working his way Eastward. He could double back on his trail so don't disregard any tips in the general vicinity.

The Bruno Studio Strings fundraising concert for Hopeful Hearts should have been heard and seen by all. Grace Bruno of Capital Strings does amazing work with her very talented students and to see these kids so disciplined and enjoying what they were doing was, indeed, heartwarming. I could see the awe in audience members' faces as each young musician played their piece. Time seemed to come to a standstill as everyone became immersed in the sounds of violin and piano.

As for the venue, Wesley United Church is a beautiful, dog friendly church that really set this concert off with class. The minister was both warm and inviting. She even brought her little rescue dog in for some social time. She also made it clear that dogs were always welcome to services. Where else in Ottawa can you find a place, other than a pet store, that welcomes dogs like that?


The amazing people who made this fundraiser a success!

This beautiful concert all started because of this little fella, Mr. Beasley (a.k.a. Fraggle), who was found by Diane's (the MC) daughter wandering the streets on a winter's day a couple of months ago. Diane took him in but wasn't sure what to do with him next. With Eileen's help, they contacted Hopeful Hearts who gave them full support. With emails sent out in hopes of finding a forever home for him, it worked. Within a few days, there were several people in line wanting to adopt him. Heather fell in love and was the lucky one. However, he didn't come without medical issues. He needs major dental work once the rest of his organs have stabilized. A portion of the proceeds will go towards helping this little guy.

We had a good turnout thanks to volunteer Eileen Woodside and Grace who worked hard to organize and advertise this event. Just a little over $1500 was raised for which we are extremely grateful. Hopeful Hearts could not help the dogs in need without these fundraisers which supporters work selflessly to organize. We also could not do it without those who come out to the events in support of Hopeful Hearts. We send out a huge thank you to you all!

Dollars For Ollie.

Little Ollie was adopted on Jan 21st and just this weekend he was rushed to Alta Vista Animal Hospital with Parvo, fighting for his life. There was a little wag of the tail yesterday but Ollie is not in the clear just yet.

No new fur parent should have to deal with these kinds of vet bills so we want to do everything we can to help ease the burden for Ollie's mom. Several people have asked how they can help or donate, so we have set up an Ollie Fund through Canada Helps called Dollars For Ollie. Any amount helps, so if you would like to donate or buck or two (or more!) this will make a tremendous difference.

January 30th update: We have received an amazing $1866.00 for Ollie's vet bills!! We have been given a quote of $2500-$6000 so this will go a LONG way towards making things easier. After such a hard week with the disappearance of Max and now Ollie getting sick we can't tell you how grateful we are to have your support. You guys are absolutely amazing! Thank you!!

January 31st update: We heard from Ollie's mom and the little man is doing really well and it looks like he will get to go home tomorrow!! As of this morning his vet bill was $1785 plus an extra $375-450 per day that he stays. You're never going to believe this, but Ollie's fund has reached a grand total of $2155.89! WOW!! We are above the moon and can't thank you enough for your generosity! Chica is a 10 year young little lady who came to us all the way from Kentucky! I wonder how she feels about our Ottawa winters?

Since Chica was a stray we don’t actually know her history but we can tell you that she's a happy little girl who loves her walks and going for car rides, as she watches the world go by through the window. Chica is great with her people and so far seems very good with children too. She's in good health and her little heart is strong. Chica seems to be a bit hard of hearing but her eyesight is very good. She is very easy to take care of and the fact that she is dependable in the house is a bonus!

This lovely little girl would be the perfect furry companion for anyone who enjoys leisurely walks and car rides in the country.

2011 was a phenomenal year for Hopeful Hearts, and although we suffered some losses, we have so many wonderful memories to be thankful for. Join us as we take a stroll down 2011 and share some of our favorite memories with you all!

January started off with puppy breath, puppy breath, and more puppy breath when Daisy Mae gave birth to 9 beautiful and healthy puppies. Each angel was named in memory of a Hopeful Hearts dog that passed away in 2010: Apollo, Kennedy, Lea, Hana, Gracie, Mingo, Mai Tai, Phantom, and Shandy. Momma and her babies were adopted in March, April, and May, while the last one to be adopted was Gracie, who found her forever home in June. She was clearly holding out for the best!

We were surrounded by even more puppy breath in February when the Aussie pups joined the Hopeful Hearts family: Merlin, Piper, Tawny, Shelby, and Fozzy Bear. If fuzzy puppies weren't enough to make our hearts flutter, the love continued later that month when the Global Pet Foods Kanata, Bank St, and St. Laurent locations sponsored us during their Show Us Your Heart campaign. All money donated went directly to Hopeful Hearts, with Global Pet Foods matching every single donation!

Once a year Hopeful Hearts welcomes dogs from Beirut and in March we met the Lebanon five: Tatti, Roo, Max, Ruben and Mercy. All of them had missing limbs which gave them no chance for a life in their country. BETA (Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) raised the money and organized the transportation of all 5 fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered dogs to Montreal, where the Hopeful Hearts team met the dogs to bring them into foster care. All of these special angels were quickly adopted and are now enjoying a wonderful life!

We were brought to tears in April when you showed your support to the Hopeful Hearts family after Simba was rushed to an emergency vet with a ruptured eye. We were given an estimate of $1000-$1200 and in less than 24 hours we were shocked to see that $1125 had been donated by so many wonderful people. The generosity and compassion you showed Simba in his time of need blew us away, and it's something that we will never forget. We say this time and time again, but we could not do any of this without you. Thank you from all of us at Hopeful Hearts -- this meant the world to us -- and to Simba too!

May was a month of fundraisers: The first ever Happy Tails Spring Walk-a-thon was phenomenal, raising an outstanding $7300! The turnout was more than we could have ever dreamed and we had a blast seeing so many familiar furry faces and meeting new friends. Earlier that morning Groomer's Touch also held a fundraiser and in addition to collecting toys, dishes, accessories, crates, and beds they also raised over $550. Later that month was our Hope Springs Eternal fundraiser and another $1400 was raised. The month ended in heartache though, when we lost our beloved Joey. We know Joey is smiling down at us now, thanks to his wonderful foster mom Doogie.

By June summer was in full swing and with sizzling hot temperatures the Hopeful Hearts Dog Pond at Westfest was the place to be! Our furry friends of all shapes and sizes came out for a refreshing dip and a ton of laughs. Thanks to The Pond Clinic and Dovercourt Community Association, and all our amazing volunteers for making that weekend at Westfest a HOWLING success! We lost another Hopeful Hearts furry family member when ten year old Chiquita went to Rainbow Bridge in July. We grieved but also worried about what her absence would do to our little Simba, as they were an inseparable pair of potato-loving yorkies. It seems as though Chiquita was working her magic at Rainbow Bridge though, because after being in foster care for over a year, Simba finally found his forever home a couple of weeks later.

Our fearless leader was at the vet one day in August when Newt, a six week old pom, was brought in to be euthanized due to a faulty heart valve. Never one to turn away an animal in need, Roz convinced Newt's owners to surrender this little Humpty Dumpty to Hopeful Hearts so that we could put him back together again. Centre Veterinaire DMV performed Newt's heart surgery and he was the smallest dog they had ever operated on! It was a nervous time for all involved, but the surgery was a great success! The only way we could have saved this little boy’s life was with the incredible support of the entire doggy community who stepped up to the plate and helped us raise close to $6,000 for this surgery! Incredible!

September was a month that many of us will never forget. HSI Canada rescued over 500 dogs from a "large scale breeding facility" -- the largest seizure in Canadian history. Volunteers from rescues all across Canada and the US worked together at the emergency shelter, day and night, to take care of these angels. Words cannot describe how incredible it was to see dog lovers come together to achieve one goal: showing these dogs what it was like to be loved for the first time in their lives. Hopeful Hearts was proud to welcome 31 of these Freedom Dogs into our family.

Kamotik, a lovely young Malamute mix, was brought to us from Nunavut at the end of summer after narrowly missing her kill date by 12 hours. In October she gave birth to 7 beautiful puppies: 4 females and 3 males. The puppies were named Aura, Blaze, Eclipse, Kobalt, Nakia, Sahara, Skye. Kammi has done such a wonderful job taking care of her babies, and they're now ready for their forever homes!

November we were reminded that people of any age can make a difference when we met two wonderful young people wanting to help their animal rescue community. 8 year old Joshua had a "Rescue Dog" themed birthday party and instead of toys and video games, Joshua asked for donations and items for Hopeful Hearts' angels. Then there was 9 year old Cami who decided that instead of a birthday party, she would like to raise funds for two local dog rescue groups - Hopeful Hearts being one of them. She told us she was doing this because many dogs don't have homes, and all dogs want to be loved. A HUGE thank you Joshua & Cami for your support -- you are an inspiration to us all!

December was a very merry month!
The photos with Santa events were a hit, raising $1045. Our very delayed "fall" auction also turned out to be a great success -- raising another $3800+ for dogs in need. With the Bark & Fitz Christmas Giving Tree & our own Secret Santa event, 45 of our dogs had some new toys to play with Christmas morning and comfy beds to snooze in after indulging on yummy doggie treats! And most importantly, 22 dogs found homes that month. Many of those dogs had either been in foster care for a very long time or had never had a home of their own before, so it was a special month for them and for us.

It was quite the year for everyone at Hopeful Hearts, and at every step of the way we had people supporting us. Thank you for your support, your generosity, your shoulder to lean on, and your encouraging words.

Here's to 2012 and all of the new adventures it will bring us!

Dog of the Week: Jasper!

Please put your paws together for Jasper, our first Dog of the Week for 2012!

Hi my name is Jasper. I'm a 5 year old chocolate lab with a tattoo in my ear. I was rescued from a pound in Quebec where they said my time was up, whatever that means. I'm 100 pounds of pure love. My foster family has a yellow lab and human kids too. I play well with everyone. The 5 year old boy likes to lead me around on his adventures and I happily follow him through the house to see where we might go next. I am not very vocal, though I can bark if the need should arise. I paw at the back door when I want to go in or out of the house and I love the snow. Apparently I am going to the vet to get "tutored" right after Christmas, that sounds like fun!!

I know my commands and will happily perform them if you're holding food. I am very good at keeping you company while you are eating and ensuring that no stray bits hit the floor. I'm going to need some encouragement to improve my table manners. My nose easily touches the counter in the kitchen and I like to keep an eye on what you're storing up there. I have a reasonable amount of restraint when you're around, but if you leave something yummy up there and walk away it can be difficult for me to resist.

At night I like to curl up on your laundry or a pillow that is on the floor. I snore a bit but love to be in a room with my people. I love to get stroked and I can sit by you for hours if you would like to give me affection. I'm not one to jump on the couch, I'm happy to curl up at your feet and have a snooze.

I can't wait to meet my new family and start a new life full of good times!

As a rescue that specializes in senior and special needs dogs it's not often that we have the opportunity to bask in the glory of puppy breath and puppy fur. However that all changed in September when Kamotik arrived from Iqaluit, after Nunavut's only animal shelter had to close their doors. This was one of reasons why we urged everyone to support Nunavut in the Aviva Community Fund.

Imagine our surprise when, during a visit with the wonderful folks at Carleton Place Animal Hospital, an ultrasound showed that Kammi was expecting -- and not one or two pups, but several.

Kammi was in great hands with a very experienced foster, and a short time later, on October 24th, she gave birth to 7 beautiful and healthy pups -- 4 females and 3 males.

It's been almost two months now, and we're so excited for you to meet Kamotik's beautiful family.

Welcome, babies!

We are now accepting applications for our little angels. There will be a co-ownership agreement in place until Hopeful Hearts has seen the angels spayed or neutered. This is not a point for negotiation due to our strong beliefs in the welfare of our dogs.

Hopeful Hearts is willing to pay for the altering, deworming and first shots of the pups at our vet but would also gratefully accept donations for these vet visits by prospective owners.

The pups will be available for adoption January 2, 2012.

A couple of weeks ago one of our volunteers reviewed FurCodes on the Ottawa Dog Blog. If you haven't read the review, here it is.

"FurCodes are a genius upgrade to the dog tags of yesterday, containing all the information needed to get your furball home. Each FurCode ID tag has a unique QR code assigned to it, and by scanning it with a smart phone, your dog’s profile instantly comes up. Their profile shows their name, your contact details, veterinarian information, medical needs, and the list goes on. For the social media savvy, you can also include your Facebook and Twitter information. But what if the other person doesn’t have a smart phone or scanner? Simple. There’s an ID code on the back of the tag that can be entered into the FurCode website to access the profile. Hopeful Hearts Weekly Review - Holiday Edition

With Christmas fast approaching we wanted to let you know what Santa's helpers have been up to this week!

It's no secret that our Fall Auction was delayed and has now turned into a Christmas auction. The last few months have been incredibly busy at Hopeful Hearts with so many dogs coming into the rescue, and we've actually reached an all-time high, as we currently have 65 dogs in foster care.

We're happy to say that the auction is in full swing now and will continue until December 23rd at noon. With more than 250 items -- from a PhoDOGrapher gift certificate to An Afternoon at the Vineyard -- you will no doubt find something that catches your eye!

All money raised helps Hopeful Hearts care for these 65 dogs along with additional dogs that find their way into our family each and every week.

The Christmas Giving Tree that Bark & Fitz Barrhaven invited us to join has been such a success that 44 of our dogs have been sponsored for Christmas!

Originally only a few dogs at a time were going to be put on the Giving Tree to be sponsored, but after emails from Hopeful Hearts supporters asking if they could sponsor a dog even if they were unable to make it to Bark & Fitz Barrhaven, so many our angels have been given a chance to be spoiled for the holidays. If you have a chance, take a look at two of the dogs that your sponsorship has helped -- Oma and Fuji.

Thank you again to everyone who has sponsored a Hopeful Hearts dog for Christmas -- either by emailing us or visiting Bark & Fitz Barrhaven. We're overwhelmed by the support we've received -- not only from the Ottawa community, but from sponsors in California, New York, and Waterloo -- just to name a few. Dog of the Week: Topo!

Our apologies for being away from the blog world! Our blog lady has been busy busy busy, but wanted to share with you a special little guy who is new to the Hopeful Hearts family.

Please put your paws together for Topo, our Dog of the Week!

Topo is one of our Freedom Dogs -- aptly named because he, along with 600+ other dogs, were rescued in September from a puppy mill where he spent the first part of his life. Topo is now with Hopeful Hearts and in a loving foster home, finally receiving the love and affection that he deserves.

Topo is a black 5 month old terrier mix puppy with wiry hair, white paws and a white tip to his upturned black tail. He loves to chew, play, cuddle, and give kisses, and he is absolutely adorable. He was skittish when he first came, afraid of loud noises, cars and other dogs. He is much better now, walks well on a leash, and is eager to meet every person he sees. He still has a tendency to jump up on people out of excitement and he wants to play with other dogs (and cats) once he gets over his first bout of shyness, whether they want to play with him or not. I have only heard him bark once or twice, although he will whine on occasion, but he has never shown any sign of aggression.

Topo knows how to sit, lie down, and will sometimes stay - we're working on that, as well as learning the command "leave it". He loves to chase a ball in the back yard if you throw or kick it for him. He has a tendency to be car sick, so he is not fond of travelling in the car. I take him outside regularly for bathroom breaks, and he is doing very well on his way to becoming fully housebroken. He is fine overnight - although we make it a point to make sure he gets outside the very first thing in the morning. He loves to chew almost anything - so clothes, books, papers and especially shoes have been placed out of puppy reach.

Topo is very sweet and affectionate, quick to learn and to please, and very very cute. He has shown some anxiety when his humans pay attention to other dogs or cats, so we think Topo would be best suited in a household where he would be the only pet, at least for the first few months until he becomes more secure in his environment.

Christmas Giving Tree - Part 2

Due to an overwhelming response we've now added 5 more of our angels to Bark & Fitz Barrhaven's Christmas Giving Tree. Spencer, Lola, Jazz, Dezzy & Libby all have secret santas, so please meet the newest monkeys who would love to find a little something under their Christmas tree!

HOW IT WORKS:

It's very simple! Bark & Fitz Barrhaven will be setting up a Christmas tree in the front of their store, and from this tree will hang the ID cards for the above dogs. On the back of the ID card will be a couple things each foster monkey would like for Christmas. When a customer wishes to participate they will take the ID card and prepare a small gift package for that rescue dog. You can create a package using the amazing products in Bark & Fitz or from other stores, and then drop it off to Bark & Fitz no later than December 24th.

So there you have it! Visit Bark & Fitz Barrhaven from now until Christmas to sponsor one of these monkeys!

Dog of the Week: Sila!

Silatujaq (Sila) is a 7 - 8 week old male husky mix. He is an intelligent, energetic playful pup. Sila is looking for a family that will give him all the love and attention he so deserves, as well as continuing his training and enrolling him in puppy/obedience classes.

Sila's Story

We are Tom and Mary Ann, the finders of this little lost puppy. We live in Kangiqsujuaq (Wakeham Bay), Quebec, an Inuit community on the Hudson Strait.

We first heard this little puppy on the night of Saturday, October 29th, but couldn't find him. On Sunday morning, we heard his cries again and crawled underneath a school to pull him out. He had spent the night in the cold and looked like he hadn't been fed in over a week. He wouldn't have made it another night - there were even crows waiting for him.

When we brought him home, his front left paw had been really injured and he couldn't put weight on it. We heard that a group of teens had been kicking him the night before. He was very skinny, stinky and fell over when he tried to walk. He ate lots that first day, took a nice warm bath and, of course slept the day away. At this point we guessed his birthday to have been October 1.

We hung posters and made an announcement on the local radio station in attempt to find his owners, but nobody came forward. We decided to send him down south where you could care for him and he could see a vet.

He has caught on to the house training and crate training pretty well and he loves to play. He can be a bit skittish, but also very loving and cuddly once he knows whom to trust. We named him "Silatujuq" [Sill-a-toy-yuck], "brave" in Inuktitut. He now answers to "Sila", which happens to mean "outside", which is appropriate because that's where we found him!

We hope you love and enjoy Sila as much as we have.

New additions.

We would like to introduce you to three very special ladies -- Ava, Lola, and Zoe. They, along with 16 other dogs, were rescued from a hoarding situation by the Montreal SPCA on November 4th. These monkeys have now made their way to Hopeful Hearts and we're very happy to welcome them into the family.

Ava is an 8 year old friendly golden who wants nothing more than to be loved.

Lola is a 10 year old Terrier surprise who loves food, her furry friends, and squeaky toys.

Zoe is a 14 year old pom who's tail never stops wagging.

Dog of the Week: Libby!

Please put your paws together for Libby, our Dog of the Week! (although her foster mom feels that Libby should be Dog of the YEAR)

Libby is a 12 year old Chihuahua who appears to have been loved during her life. Sadly, at her advanced age she was left to die in a Kentucky shelter. When she was admitted into Hopeful Hearts' care, Libby was diagnosed with geriatric Vestibular disease (which means she holds head at a crooked angle and staggers about like a drunken sailor), a Grade III heart murmur and was found to be in Grade IV kidney failure; she was given only days to live. It was heartbreaking to watch this tiny, frail girl fight for her life even though her organs had begun to shut down.

With nothing to lose, the vet tried new medications and Libby was given the tools to fight. For several weeks she was force fed several small meals a day and, within the first month, gained some weight which brought with it hope and new found energy. Within a few months, Libby's health had not only stabilized, but the kidney disease actually marginally regressed. Today, she enjoys a normal diet of low protein kibble served only three times a day. After eight months in foster care - long after she was expected to have passed away - Libby is a healthy, happy and very loved little girl.

Because of how gregarious she is, Libby's foster mother believes Libby is a Lab stuck in a Chihuahua body. Libby has yet to meet a person, dog, cat, bunny or goldfish who isn't her BFF. In fact, because of how well Libby reads people and dogs, she routinely assists her foster mom with home visits; she is Hopeful Hearts' equivalent to Cesar's Daddy.

Dog of the Week: Dunny!

Please put your paws together for Dunny, our Dog of the Week! This sweet man is also Dog of the Month over at Responsible Dog Owners of Canada, so check them out!

Dunny is a very handsome and distinguished looking purebred yellow lab of about 10 or 11 years of age. He is in good shape for an older gentleman, and feels friskier every day with his glucosamine supplements. Tons of life left in this boy!

True to his breed, he loves his people, his walks and his food. He is very cuddly, sweet and affectionate, and he will bump your elbow with his head to remind you to pet him. He is really quiet; his new foster family has never heard him bark, not even once!

Dunny is friendly with other dogs and good with cats too. He is big and strong, and he will need an experienced handler for his walks because he tends to get excited and pull a bit. He knows his commands; come, sit, stay and down and he tries hard to be a really good boy.

We'd like to welcome three beautiful angels to the Hopeful Hearts family!

Anouk is a 1.5 year old Husky Shepherd mix that we just picked up from the Gatineau SPCA. We don’t have a lot of details about Anouk, but this gorgeous girl has a personality to match her good looks. She is very sweet, well balanced and loves people and dogs alike. She could run and play for hours on end with other dogs at the off leash park while sneaking in kisses for the humans at the same time.

At home, she is calm and easygoing (especially after a walk), stays off furniture and chills out with her toys or alone. She is quite curious about her pint-sized foster brother Max, who she is learning is not a squeak toy, while she follows him around the house trying to get him to play.

Bosley is estimated to be 4 years old and was found as a stray. Although that makes us sad, it doesn't seem to make him sad! Oh no. Bosley enjoys life and is content with everything. What a beauty. Our boy Bosley is huge but his heart is even bigger. He loves everything and everyone, and is just one big pooch of love. His fosters say that he loves their pug, 2 cats, and the squirrels in the yard. He wants to be everyone's friend!

His favourite activities are lounging around the house, and going outside to discover new smells or say hello to neighbours. His behaviour is impeccable with everyone, kids, dogs we meet, and on leash. I haven't heard him bark yet. He's as sweet as can be, calm, and docile.

Joby, 2 years old, was also found as a stray. She had a severely broken leg and the shelter felt it best to remove it. She is adjusting pretty well to being a tripod even though it’s been less than 2 weeks. Joby had pups in the past but that is over for her thankfully. Now she wants to enjoy life and be cuddled and loved.

We don't know yet if Joby is comfortable with kids but considering all the changes she's gone through it’s best she have only doggy siblings right now. She doesn't like her four legged foster sisters and brothers to get near her food bowl and she will growl at them to let them know that she would like to be left alone. Same with her toys. It’s been a long time since Joby has had anything that is truly her own so she's a little afraid to lose all this great stuff.

Dog of the Week: Charlie!

Hi, my name is Charlie and I'm an eleven year old black lab. Everyone keeps telling me that I'm a senior but I don't believe them; eleven is the new 7 you know.

I am what you would call a bit of a gentle giant, I just love everyone and everything including these two new things I've learned about living with my foster family: belly rubs and doggie beds. At first I didn't understand what they were but now that I know - Wow! Are they awesome!

I enjoy walks and do really well off leash in the park where I love playing fetch with tennis balls. I am also an excellent food critic if you ever need some critiquing, though I'll be honest, I have yet to taste something I didn't like. I especially enjoy roasted veggies. Yum, yum.

Being a wiser and more experienced doggie, I like to reflect and philosophize when I'm at home (just because it sounds like I'm snoring doesn't mean I'm not pondering the meaning of life) and I especially like to hang out and be near you. Now that I have been learning all about this crazy thing called love, I can't get enough. It means so much to know that you love me just the way I am. And while I am definitely young at heart, I have a couple of parts that aren't as lively - my vet said that I once had a torn muscle in my leg that was never treated so some days it's a little hard for me to sit down. Also, while my bladder can make it 6-8 hours if you are out, I really feel much better if I'm able to go every few hours.

My foster mom keeps telling me that I have an amazing forever family out there looking for me where I will be showered with love. I sure hope it's you! I can't wait to be home with you.

Back in September we welcomed three new furry faces to the Hopeful Hearts family: Iqalok, Kamotik, and Kira. They came to us when the Iqaluit Humane Society (the only animal shelter in all of Nunavut) had to close it's doors due to a shortage of funds and volunteers.

These three globe trotters have been getting used to life here in Ottawa and are currently in loving foster homes, and last week we learned that Kamotik was expecting!

By Monday evening Kamotik had delivered 7 very beautiful babies and although we're overwhelmed, we're also very relieved. We shudder to think what may have happened to Kammi and her pups if the volunteers at the Iqaluit Humane Society hadn't worked tirelessly to ensure that their dogs were rescued.

These angels will not be available for adoption for a few months but in the meantime we will need great people to foster these babies when they are ready. Dog of the Week

Our Dog of the Week is Chase, an 11 year old bichon who is still waiting for his forever home after being with Hopeful Hearts for many months.

Chase was with one person his entire life until she could no longer take care of him. He's having a great time with his foster family but would love a forever home of his own.

Dog of the Week: Chase!

Oh, hi there! My name is Chase and this is where I get to tell you all about myself. My foster mom and I had a race and she said that whoever wins gets to share my story, so you better believe that I ran like lightning! There was NO WAY I was going to let her tell you any embarrassing stories about me, like that time I accidentally wrapped myself around a bike rack. Oh shoot.

Let me start off by saying that I'm adorable - like George Clooney adorable. Oh mom, stop rolling your eyes. What? Who is Jar Jar Binks?

Anyway, according to my file I'm 11 years old but for an "old" dude I'm in tip top shape - even Richard Simmons is jealous of my shapely legs and abs! I don't have any teeth left but I don't let that stop me from being a Dentabone addict (foster mom calls that irony) and I love me some kibble!

Not only am I adorable with my flowing locks and contagious smile but foster mom also says that I'm a sweet little man - a gentleman is what she calls me. I listen to her when she tells me to do something and she doesn't have to say it twice - especially if it means I get a body hug!

My favorite things are my walks, playing in the park with my furry friends, building forts out of blankets, and my furry foster sister DeeDee (she promised me a Dentabone if I said that).

I spent my entire life with one person but then she couldn't take care of me anymore so I came to live with my foster mom. She lets me hog her bed and she plays my favorite game - chase Mr. Chase around a tree - but I'd love my own home and my own person to build blanket forts with.

With Halloween is right around the corner we would like to invite you to join us for two very fun events happening this weekend!

Saturday October 29th

This coming Saturday, October 29, Wickedly Westboro is the event to be at. It is a fun-filled family event all along Richmond Road in Westboro Village. There will be a family zombie walk, a best dog costume contest, and so much more! Photos will be taken by Laura Benn from Pawsh: Culture For Pets and the $5.00 entry donation will go towards Hopeful Hearts!

Sunday October 30th

The annual Hopeful Hearts Halloween Party is being held this Sunday! Join us for a fabulous day full of games, crafts, prizes, a haunted house, and delicious food!

Dog of the Week: Max!

Please put your paws together for Max, our Dog of the Week!

According to what Max tells us, he is part love monster, part cat. He rubs up against furniture just like a kitty and the only thing missing is a meow.

This little man is 10 years old, but don't let his age fool you. Max is healthy, full of energy and loves going for walks. He regularly gets comments like "oh my, that little fellow can't be a senior! Look at him go!" Max can't see or hear 100% but he doesn't let that stop him. He's faster than superman, our little monkey.

With age comes wisdom, and Max has impeccable manners. He is completely house trained, is good with other dogs, walks well on a leash, and doesn't bark or chew. See? Part cat!

After long walks on the beach and car rides, Superman Max is happiest napping with his person, as he is very snuggly and loves attention. His foster mom is smitten with him and can't say enough good things about this furry little gentleman.

We'd like to welcome some new furry additions to our Hopeful Hearts family!

Dolly came to Hopeful Hearts as stray and is settling in nicely with her foster family. She's all smiles (see above photo!) and will happily curl up in your lap, even if she's just met you. When she walks she wiggles and you can't help but grin when you see her coming.

Millie is an owner surrender due to divorce, but she's not letting that get her down so you shouldn't either! She's movin' on up in the world and is loving her new life. Cuddling is her middle name and playing with her furry companions is a her game!

Newman (also known as Mr. Casanova!) was also found as a stray by the same shelter Dolly was at. He decided he wasn't ready to say goodbye to Dolly so he came to Hopeful Hearts with her. Newman's favorite activities are cuddling with people and stealing hearts - I guess that explains the heart on the side of his body! Given the chance I'm sure he would be more than happy to add yours to his collection!

Dog of the Week: Oma!

Please put your paws together for Oma, our Dog of the Week!

Oma (meaning Grandma) came to Hopeful Hearts from a shelter in Ohio, so this will be her first winter in Canada. Despite the fact that most of us put on a few pounds to prepare for the loooong cold winter months, Oma has actually lost weight. You see, she arrived quite overweight due to lack of exercise but since living with her foster mom (AKA personal trainer!) she has slimmed down and gained some muscle. Way to go Oma!

Aside from long walks on the beach, Oma loves swimming and exploring the wooded parks near her foster home. She tends to find walking down the street to be a little dull and boring, as she likes to run around when she is in a really in a good mood.

Like many of us Oma really likes her food, but she's become much better about her treats being taken away from her, or her foster brother being near her while she has treats.

This social butterfly loves making new friends! In fact, she loves everybody, including children, and has yet to meet someone she doesn't suck up to for a pat. She also is very tolerant of younger dogs and other dogs she meets in the park.

Dog of the Week: Willow!

This little monkey was brought to a Quebec shelter because her person entered a senior's residence and could not bring Willow with her. Although she may have been loved, she was not well taken care of as she arrived dirty and matted, terribly underweight, and with an ear infection to top it off. After spending two very anxious and scared weeks at the shelter, they decided that Willow would be better off with Hopeful Hearts, and so she was welcomed with open arms.

Willow was very timid for the first little and would curl up into a ball if anyone approached her, but that didn't last long. It's almost as though she blossomed overnight, because one morning she woke up and started doing zoomies all over the house. She had a new lease on life.

It's now been almost three weeks since Willow came to Hopeful Hearts and she is a completely different dog. She smiles -- no, she grins! -- when she's happy and just absolutely loves life. She dances when she sees her leash and collar and she adores her bouncy ball with feet. Right now she's learning how to fetch and we figure she's going to be in the big leagues in no time. And if there was an award for best cuddler, she would win hands down.

Hopeful Hearts Weekly Review.

By now I'm sure most of you have heard about the seizure of the 500+ (now 600+!) dogs from Paws "R" Us, a "commercial breeder" in Quebec. One of our very own, Jennifer Rose, was on the front lines while this was taking place, and helped day and night to care for these dogs.

Jennifer shared her experience with Pawsh Magazine:

"I am still reeling from exhaustion and emotion. Both sadness and happiness. Seeing the sadness and fear in the dogs' eyes, meeting new friends, being covered head to toe in dog poop, seeing a little dog's slight tail wag with a glimmer of hope in their eyes. There was one dog that when you talked to him he'd smile a big smile with his lips pulled right back to show his front teeth then he would slowly, tentatively roll over to show his belly - he melted my heart."

Some of our own angels have come from Paws "R" Us, including Piglet, Dudley, and Joey.

Piglet and Dudley found their forever homes, but Joey remained in palliative care with Hopeful Hearts. He came to us last last year in horrific condition from years of neglect as a breeding dog. With the tender loving care of his foster Mom, Doogie, Joey flourished from a pathetic dog in the throws of heart failure to a silly old fart with an adorable personality. As you may remember, his heart failure progressed to a point where our old boy was having troubles breathing. In May we came to the difficult decision that, after enjoying a week laying in the sun and sniffing the grass, our Joe Joe would join the other Hopeful Hearts angels at the bridge.

Bringing in these special needs dogs can be challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Most often these angels are turned down by rescues due to difficulty with finding adoptive homes, but not by Hopeful Hearts. We were created in 2007 especially to help fill a void in the local rescue world for senior and special needs dogs, and we have continued this mission today. We have an incredible team of foster parents but as always, we are looking for more people to help us. The Humane Society International stated that the cost of caring for these animals is a whopping $6000.00/day, so if you would like to help these dogs in need, please visit the Humane Society International website for details. A Facebook group called Ottawa Rescue Donation Drop off locations was created by our volunteer, Brittany, and lists the items the HSI is asking for and the stores in Ottawa that are accepting these donations. For those of you not on Facebook, the same information can be found in a Google Document titled Ottawa helps!

Jennifer will be heading back again this weekend to help these 600+ dogs, along with some of our other volunteers: Laurie, Doogie, Sarah, Mel, Christine, and Brittany.

Hopeful Hearts Weekly Review.

First off, we just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and supported Hopeful Hearts, RDOC, and Therapeutic Paws of Canada at Going to the Dogs last Friday at the Rideau Carleton Raceway. The buffet dinner was fantastic, the banana splits were amazing, and it was great to see so many faces. We hope everyone had a lot of fun and didn't lose too much money at the slot machines!

It's been a busy couple of weeks with new dogs coming in from all over, but we wanted to tell you about three in particular: Iqalok, Kamotik, and Kira.

Due to lack of funding and a shortage of volunteers, the Iqaluit Humane Society (the only animal shelter in all of Nunavut) had to close their doors, and unfortunately the fates of the remaining dogs were pretty grim. Faced with the reality of what would happen to them if not rescued, Hopeful Hearts stepped up and welcomed these beauties with open arms. One very lucky dog who is no longer looking for his forever home is little Newt (AKA Charlie). We told you two weeks ago that his surgery was successful and that he was recuperating at the hospital. Today he has an adoption pending and is home with his mom and is doing better every day.

The only "problem" now? Trying to keep Newt calm and quiet while he continues to heal. Apparently his little supernewt heart has given him a new lease on life and he has become 110% puppy. Oh, what a wonderful problem to have! We cannot thank you enough for supporting Hopeful Hearts and helping Newt through this journey. Without you we wouldn't be able to do what we do.

Hopeful Hearts has a few events planned in the coming months, such as our golf tournament happening on September 24th. There is still time to register and we would love to see you there. Dog of the Week: Teeghan!

Tiggy is a silly girl who is constantly wiggling and dancing, and she does this with a huge smile on her face that lights up the room. Watch out, Ellen DeGeneres - there's a new dancing queen in town!

In addition to showing the world her crazy dance moves, Tiggy has become super playful with her foster mom and is now learning how to play with toys - her absolute favorite being her squeaky lamb.

Once Tiggy is comfortable with the people around her, she's very sweet, cuddly, and loves to show off, doing anything she can to get attention.

Tiggy is a very smart girl and although she has fears (who doesn't?), she is strong enough to overcome them and is getting braver every single day! At agility class she went from acting like a dog pancake by laying flat on the ground, not wanting to set foot on an obstacle, to doing the whole course including the scary teeter totter! This was all on her own terms, as she's never forced to do anything but is willing to do it on her own time.

Hopeful Hearts Weekly Review.

On Sunday Dovercourt Recreation Centre hosted their annual Dovercourt Doggy Swim, and this year Hopeful Hearts was very honoured to be part of it. We had wet doggies, raffle prizes, nail trimming, a BBQ, and a ton of laughs - what more could you ask for?

A great time was had by all and Hopeful Hearts raised almost $600.00 for our angels! A big thanks to Dovercourt for having us there, and especially to everyone who joined us and donated!

Last week we told you about our smallest angel, Newt, who needed to have heart surgery to close a faulty valve. We were given an estimate of $3000.00 to $4500.00 for this surgery, and thanks to your generosity, Hopeful Hearts managed to raise a whopping $4000.00.

Unfortunately Newt had a setback over the weekend and collapsed, so surgery needed to happen sooner rather than later. The only vet in Ottawa who could perform this surgery gave us an estimate that was $1000.00 higher (with no rescue discount) than other places in Ontario and Quebec had given, so this was not an option for us.

Luckily we were able to bring him to see Dr. Planté at Centre Veterinaire DMV and Newt had his heart surgery this past Thursday. Newt was the smallest dog they had ever operated on, so it was a nervous time for all involved, but we're happy to tell you that the surgery went just fine and our little fuzz bug is currently recovering from the surgery at the hospital. Not surprisingly, he already has an adoption pending, so Momma Newt is anxiously awaiting his return.

Dog of the Week: Newt!

Our fearless leader, Roz, was at the Ottawa Vet Hospital last Saturday with her cat when one of the receptionists notified the staff that a 6 week old pup was coming in for euthanization. Roz kept her eyes peeled for anyone bringing in a baby and sure enough, in came Newt. This little fellow was trying desperately to get out of his crate (did he know what was coming?) so Roz asked the owner whether she could hold the pup and if he going to euthanize. He said yes and explained that his wife and daughter bred Pomeranians but this one had a faulty heart. Roz explained who she was and asked if she could bring the little furball into Hopeful Hearts to see if we could help. Thankfully he agreed and we are now blessed with this tiny little ball of fluff and love!

The technical name for Newt's condition is called Patent ductus arteriosus.

"At birth, mammals must adapt from living in a fluid environment (the amniotic fluid) and acquiring oxygen through the mother's blood, to breathing air and acquiring oxygen through their own lungs. The ductus arteriosus is very important in the adaptation process. This is a small communicating blood vessel between the pulmonary artery (which carries blood to the lungs), and the aorta (which carries blood to the rest of the body). Before birth, most of the blood from the fetal heart bypasses the fetal lungs via the ductus arteriosus. The lungs gradually become functional fairly late in fetal development. At birth, the blood supply from the mother is of course cut off, the dog (or other mammal) begins breathing on its own, and blood flow through the ductus arteriosus decreases dramatically. Within a few days, the ductus closes off completely.

Where the ductus does not close, the dog is left with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The extent to which this affects the dog depends on the degree of patency, or opening, of the ductus."

What does this mean for Mr. Newt? Poorly oxygenated blood, shortness of breath, weakness or collapse. Surgery needs to be performed as soon as possible before Newt's heart tries to compensate for the defect and it gets worse.

8:34 am: Newt clearly has a ton of people rooting for him, because his surgery fund has reached $4045.00! Thank you!!

Dog of the Week: Tequila!

Please put your paws together for our very first Dog of the Week: Tequila!

Cute doesn't even begin to describe this little monkey, and yet he's been in foster care -- without a single inquiry! -- since mid-May. How can that be, dear Tequila? We just can't figure it out.

Tequila is an 8 year old Lhasa mix who gets along great with dogs and people. He's full of life and likes playing with his foster brother and strutting his stuff on the sidewalk, but also enjoys being a couch potato and watching his favorite TV shows: Glee, Wheel of Fortune, and Dancing With the Stars.

Tequila is happiest when at his person's side and has told me that all he really wants is a nice gentle owner who will love him and be with him. If you could be that person, please email adopting@hopefulhearts.com.
